My Opinion on Choosing an Endocrine Surgeon in India

It’s been over a decade, I’m in the endocrine business. From my experience, I can say that choosing an endocrine surgeon in India is a difficult task.

Being in an established practice as endocrinologist, I have relationship with a few endocrine surgeons in our medical community. But, for a patient it is hard to find as this surgical procedure is still at nascent stages.

However, if you do find one they might express interest in performing the surgery considering it’s an expensive one. They eagerly wait for us to send them patients. But, like any other profession, some surgeons are superior to the others. Therefore, the best way is to consult with endocrinologists. They can provide you with the best endocrine surgeons in India and will not hesitate to share their experience with them.

As patients, we want lowest complications possible. Thus, the outcome of your surgery is related to the number of cases handled by that surgeon. But, deciding on a surgeon solely based on technical skill isn’t enough! From my personal experiences, there are numerous endocrine surgeons who are incapable of catering to the humanistic side.

So, how to choose then?

If it’s an emergency and you had to choose between someone skilled but lacking bedside manner vs. someone who is nice but a bit less competent - you should go with the former.

Ideally, the decision shouldn’t be between these 2 scenarios. Technically, both the endocrine surgeons in India should possess skill and decent bedside manner. After all, if a patient is not treated well, it only reflects poor recommendation from our side.

In my opinion, you shouldn’t settle on an endocrine surgeon unless if you absolutely comfortable with him/her. This is crucial for successful outcome down the line. I believe our patients deserve only the best.

Hope this helps!
